Anesthesia
Without sensation

Emergence phase
When procedure is completed; Anesthetic agents are discontinued and allowed to wear off

Emulsion
Medication is contained in a mixture of water and oil bound with an emulsifier

Endotracheal (ET) tube
Equipment used to intubate patient to restore airway

Extubation
Removal of the endotracheal (ET) tube

Fasciculation
A twitch

Induction phase
Begins when medications are administered to initiate general anesthesia and concludes when an adequate depth of anesthesia is reached and the patients airway is secured

Intubation
Insertion of endotracheal (ET) tube to create airway

Lacrimation
Producing tears

Laryngeal masked airway (LAM)
Equipment used on patients to establish adequate airway

Maintenance phase
Begins as the patients airway is established and continues up until the procedure is complete

Minimum alveolar concentration (MAC)
Measurement of potency of inhalation agents

Opioid
Any drug that has morphine-like actions

Post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)
Where patients are taken to recover from completed surgery

Preindustrial phase
Begins as the patient is admitted into the Preoperative holding area and continues up to the point of administrations of anesthetic agents

Rapid sequence induction
A variation of standard induction used for patients who are at an increased risk for gastric reflux and pulmonary aspiration
