HESI/ NCLEX Pharmacology Memory Tricks

Beta-1 vs Beta-2 receptor location
“You have 1 heart and 2 lungs”:
Beta-1 are therefore primarily on heart. (decreased HR & contractions)
Beta-2 primarily on lungs. (Bronchodilation)

Cisplatin: major side effect, action
Antineoplastic Chemotherapeutic Agent
Major side effect: Splat (vomiting sound)–vomiting so severe that anti-nausea drug needed.
Action: Goes Into the DNA strand.

Pupils in overdose: morphine vs. amphetamine
“MorPHINE: Fine. AmPHETamine: Fat”:
Morphine overdose: pupils constricted (fine).
Amphetamine overdose: pupils dilated (fat).

Atropine use: tachycardia or bradycardia
“A goes with B”:
(A)tropine used clinically to treat (B)radycardia.

Ipratropium (Atrovent) action:
(Atropi)ne is buried in the middle: ipr(Atropi)um, so it behaves like Atropine.

Aside from tachycardia and bradycardia its used for (RESPIRATORY)

Reserpine action
Treating hypertension
Reserpine depletes the (Reser)ves of norepinephr(ine) [and serotonin].

Contraindicated in patients with history of depression.

Bleomycin: action
Antitumor Antibiotic
“Bleo-Mycin (Bl)ows (My) DNA to bits”:
Bleomycin works by fragmenting DNA (blowing it to bits).
(My) DNA signals that its used for cancer (targeting self cells).

Propranolol and related ‘-olol’ drugs: usage
“olol” is just two backwards lower case b’s.
Backward b’s stand for “beta blocker”.

Beta blockers include acebutolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, oxprenolol, propranolol.

Transdermal Medication Administration
Do and Donts
Cleanse area of old patch,
Remove old patches
Document patch placement, date, and time
Place over dry skin

Place over dense hair
Shave hair
Place heat over patch (hot bath & heating pad)

Antibiotics used in TB:
ST–(st)reptomycin, R–(R)ifampin, I–(i)soniazid, P–(p)yrazinamide, E–(e)thambutol

Anti-retrovirals: Look for (vir)
HIV medications
(vir) = virus
acyclo(vir), efa(vir)enz, enfu(vir)tide, Retro(vir), saquina(vir), In(vir)ase, mara(vir)oc

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors
“No high blood pressures allowed in aPRIL”
Hypertension medications
aCE Inhibitors en in PRIL just like (a)pril
capto(pril), enala(pril), benaze(pril), Lisino(pril), Rami(pril)

Ondansetron (zofran)
best antiemetic medication
Ondansetron (zofran)– ends with “tron”

Just like theses other antiemetics:
Granise”tron” (kytril or granisol), Dolase”tron” (Anzemet), Palonose”tron” (Aloxi)

Antiinflammatory Corticosteroids
Addison disease, hormone & cancer therapy
lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, asthma, COPD
The best/ #1 Antiinflammatory Corticosteroids end in (ONE)

prednisONE, cortisONE, dexamethasONE, BeclomethasONE (Vanceril), Triamcinolone (Azmacort0

Proton pump Inhibitors
duodenal & gastric ulcers, erosive gastritis, GERD

Don’t Open, Chew, or Crush
Before meals

Proton pump Inhibitors end in (PAZOLE)

• Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
• Pantoprazole (Protonix)
• Esomeprazole (Nexium)
• Omeprazole (Prilosec)
• Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
• Dexlansoprazole

Magnesium Hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia)
for Constipation & to cleanse GI tract

Not for undiagnosed abdominal pain OR renal impairment

M.O.M (Milk of Magnesia) Magnesium Hydroxide

“Take M.O.M in the PM for a BM in the AM”
