This healthcare article is dedicated to problems of blood pressure. It is written there that people who drink alcoholic drinks in excessive quantities increase their blood pressure in 1,5-2 times than usually. They say that the more a person consumes alcohol, the more association with hypertension he feels. The same smoking does: it increases blood pressure although some people who got used to smoke several cigarettes per day don’t feel considerable increasing in their pressure because of adaptation to smoking.
When you smoke a cigarette, you feel a temporary increase of blood pressure of 5-10 mm Hg. Still, constant smokers have lower blood pressure because nicotine, which contains in cigarette, decreases appetite, and this causes weight loss, – and as a consequence – a lowering blood pressure. When you drink 5 cups of coffee per day, caffeine, which contains in this quantity of coffee, also causes increasing blood pressure (mostly for elderly people, who already supper from high blood pressure, but not for those who have normal one).
They say that if you combine together coffee, cigarettes and alcohol, this can double effect of increase in several times, so if people with high pressure will control their consuming of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, this can be helpful in decreasing of their blood pressure (Jennifer Warner). Actually, I think that if a person will drink a cup of coffee, after 15-20 minutes his blood pressure will increase of 15 mm Hg, and will stay at this level during two hours. But this doesn’t mean that his health will be worse to some extent.
If a person is healthy and has a normal blood pressure, 5 cups of coffee will not ruin his health and will not cause any damage to him. In case he suffers from high blood pressure, also he doesn’t have to refuse from pleasure to drink a cup of coffee in the morning, but he is better avoid drinking coffee before sleeping, because it can cause insomnia due to his excitable nervous system (Matt Pitcher). There are patients who, although they suffer from high blood pressure, or who have cardiovascular diseases, are allowed to drink a small cup of coffee in the morning and it doesn’t cause any damage to them.
Besides, smell of prepared coffee not excites, but calms nervous system. Smoking really stimulates secretion of adrenalin, which increases blood pressure and also causes exhausting of nutrition resources of organism; especially it decreases level of vitamin C. Really, when a person smokes, nicotine favors increase of frequency if heart beating – in result of increase heart is forced to work more intensively and it needs more oxygen.
A person starts to breathe deeply and consumes more air; the frequency of breathing (as a person forces his muscles and his lungs to work more intensively) causes increase of his blood pressure (High Blood Pressure). At the same time carbon monoxide which is a part of cigarette smoke, decreases quantity of oxygen, which enters via lungs into the blood and heart. In such a way, whereas organism needs more quantity of oxygen, it experiences lack of it. Besides, the vascular are constricted and heart rhythm becomes more rapid, and this also causes increase of blood pressure.
Consuming alcohol is one of the links in factor chain, which influence increasing of blood pressure. Alcohol also causes exhausting of organism’s resources, loose of vitally important nutrition elements, favors secretion of adrenalin, which increases blood pressure as well. If a person drinks alcohol excessively, it can cause also weight gaining, because alcohol contains calories, although it seems not to be nourishing. It also can cause ulcer, cirrhosis and also cerebrum diseases, diseases f liver and muscles, including heart muscle as well.
Brains of person who consumes alcohol in big dosages, constantly struggles with its depressive influence. When such a person stops to consume alcohol, his brains mechanically continue their compensatory activity, and because of this he becomes excited, nervous, his hands are trembling and this can continue until he drinks again (High Blood Pressure). This is an example of alcoholic dependence. Still, majority of people with alcoholic dependence have increased blood pressure.
Actually, I agree with this article stating that caffeine, alcohol and nicotine increase blood pressure. Still, it is not so dangerous in case a person can control the process. There are people, suffering from low blood pressure and GPs prescribe them to drink coffee during the day in order to increase their blood pressure. As well there are some “non-traditional” doctors, who advise (stating from the worst to the best) even start smoking a cigarette per day to those people who suffer from low pressure (although I cannot agree this is a good medical advise).
But there are scientific researches and statistical information that people who consume alcohol in small or moderate doses, have less percent of early mortality then those who don’t drink alcohol at all and those who drink a lot (drinkers). So, the only advise can be as follows: usage should be very moderate: you should realize all consequences and understand that your health is something valuable and appreciate it.

People who drink alcohol excessively (over two drinks per day) have a one and a half to two times increase in the frequency of high blood pressure (hypertension). The association between alcohol and high blood pressure is particularly noticeable when the alcohol intake exceeds 5 drinks per day. Moreover, the connection is a dose-related phenomenon.
In other words, the more alcohol that is consumed, the stronger is the link with hypertension. Although smoking increases the risk of vascular complications (for example, heart disease and stroke) in people who already have hypertension, it is not associated with an increase in the development of hypertension. Nevertheless, smoking a cigarette can repeatedly produce an immediate, temporary rise in the blood pressure of 5 to10 mm Hg. Steady smokers however, actually may have a lower blood pressure than nonsmokers.
The reason for this is that the nicotine in the cigarettes causes a decrease in appetite, which leads to weight loss. This, in turn, lowers the blood pressure. In one study, the caffeine consumed in 5 cups of coffee daily caused a mild increase in blood pressure in elderly people who already had hypertension, but not in those who had normal blood pressures. What’s more, the combination of smoking and drinking coffee in persons with high blood pressure may increase the blood pressure more than coffee alone.
Limiting caffeine intake and cigarette smoking in hypertensive individuals, therefore, may be of some benefit in controlling their high blood pressure.
