Carmen Hooker Odom, the secretary of the Department of Human and Health Services, announced to remove health disparity by taking it as main concern for DHHS, which outlines the demographics and health disparities of North Carolina.

Though the status of North Carolinian’s health is improving but the general population of the North Carolina is still waiting for some changes.

The current reports of the North Carolina state Center for health Statistics show that these racial and ethnic disparities in health status continues in almost all conditions. These reports depict that in North Carolina, American Indians, Hispanics and African Americans are not having better health conditions than the White population in the state (Emmanuel Ngui, 2003).

The second largest racial group in North Carolina is the African Americans. The health conditions in North Carolina for the Black population are improving still there is a big gap between African Americans and White Americans in the diseases like diabetes, asthma, cancer and some other big infectious diseases. Because African Americans don’t get qualitative healthcare and get less healthcare than Whites so they die earlier than the Whites.

According to the 1990 survey, in North Carolina, the largest population of American Indian in the east of Mississippi is the fifth- largest population in the country. They are having higher rates of death than Whites. It is expected that their changing life style and their growing contact with health services can decrease the severity of the diseases and can prevent fatal conditions.

In the last ten years, the Latino population in North Carolina is increasing fast. They are suffering from many severe diseases unduly. They are being provided with the proper health care services. They have many obstacles in getting proper health care. The main reason behind this is poverty.
