Health Care Delivery in Texas

Even as the development of medical science and the technology of its instruments have taken modern healthcare system to a state-of-the-art height, the effective management of psychological factors still proves to be the axis of healthcare, where human touch and a thorough understanding of psychology are bare essentials to complement its other part.

The medical science too admits it and accordingly various disciplines of study have come up to understand the finer details of human psychology that are entwined with the overall healing process.

Thus this essay explores the necessity and scope of health psychology, besides its inherent elements that have bearings in healing process, before reaching its conclusion. This paper will also talk about what the psychological factors are, what is its importance and why should it should be considered in healthcare setting.

Psychological Factors

Bio-psycho-social factors create a lot of impact on our health and well-being. Health psychology studies those impacts with an aim to eliminate the negative elements in bio-psycho-social factors besides incorporating the positive ones. Accordingly it encompasses areas like stress, coping strategies, perception of pain, personality determinants of health etc.

Therefore, health psychology altogether covers a vast area of study and observation on human behavior, where it probes personality variables or traits and social environment before linking one’s impact on the other – as for example, whether stress in a person could lead to minor or major ailments, ranging from cold to cancer.

The following are general psychological factors commonly associated with people which affect Healthcare systems:

v  Thinking processes (individual’s beliefs and opinions, attitude, perception in life determination, trust in the healthcare etc.) (de Guzman et al., 2000)

–   This factor pertains to the things that a person will feel, think and react to when exposed to different healthcare settings. Different attitudes, beliefs and even the individual’s perception about his situation and the healthcare system will greatly affect the healthcare setting. People who do not trust their healthcare systems and are not really determined to succeed in treatment poses a great problem for any hospital/healthcare unit. Establishment of a proper healthcare setting which compliments the patient’s attitude and perception is much preferred.

v  Emotional processes (how one feels in different situations, places, different people, and circumstances) (de Guzman et al., 2000)

–  Certain reactions by different individuals largely affect the type of health care setting that he/she requires. How people generally react under different situations determines the kind of healthcare that he/she should be given. The psychological effect of mistreating people is greatly connected with the wrong evaluation of the healthcare setting in relation to the person’s emotional responses.

v  Behavioral tendencies (includes how a person will act in self-defeating ways and self-benefiting ways) (de Guzman et al., 2000)

–  The individual’s responses to treatment and to the overall healthcare system prescribed to him/her will predetermine the suggested healthcare setting for treating the patient. The different behavioral reactions of the patient will also affect the type of treatment needed and consequently the required healthcare setting for the patient.
