While, both types of training involve weightlifting, there are quite a few variances in the way there workouts are completed. The way the muscle grows or appears to grow in these different styles of training are completely different. ? Why Body Build When You Can Strength Train Fitness trends have begun to take over the world as people spend more and more time in the gym. They begin to see certain abilities that make no sense.
There is a fellow who seems to be at the gym almost every day. He has huge, swollen muscles that rival the size of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. As he begins his bench-press work out, he progressively increases his weight. Later he adds more weight and puts two forty-five pound plates on each side of the bar. Weightlifting that much will be an impressive sight to see. Meanwhile, he struggles to lift it three times. The next day at the gym, there is another person who seems to be in good shape, yet half the size of “The Rock”. He is headed to the same bench-press machine as the fellow from the day before.
He starts his workout; eventually he increases his weight and puts two forty-five pound plates and a twenty-five on each side of the bar. There is no way that little man can lift that much weight. Remarkably, he manages to lift it five times with no problems. The difference in the weight they lifted is the difference between strength training and bodybuilding. Strength training and bodybuilding give us a great physical appearance. The work outs, reasons, and science between strength training and body building share some similarities, yet many differences as well. The reasons to strength train outweigh the reasons to body build.
The marvels of strength training regularly can be valuable to everyone. Proper strength training can be beneficial in the immediate and latter part of one’s life. “Science tells us that comorbidities like arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, back pain, and depression are significantly reduced through the effects of regular strength training” (Housle, 2011). A person might ask themselves what is strength training. Strength training is the use of weights as resistance to tear your muscles and rebuild them developing stronger functional muscle. There are some helpful uses for bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding can be helpful in combating depression. The main purpose of body building is developing the musculature of the body through specific types of diet and physical exercise, such as weightlifting, especially for competitive exhibition. Strength training workouts usually consist of compound exercises. Compound exercises are movements which incorporate more than one muscle group to accomplish the required weightlifting. Exercises such as the incline, decline, and flat bench press are a good examples, because they integrate the back, chest, arms, and shoulders when lifting.
Before any productive strength training begins, a one repetition maximum for each exercise performed is determined. Strength training workouts are completed with heavy weights, about 80% to 90% of a person’s one repetition maximum. When heavy weight is used, the repetitions for each set are usually kept in the three to five range for about three to five sets. Using heavy weights takes a toll on the body. Strength trainers will wait about three to five minutes, before they move on to the next set of the exercise, and as long as five minutes between different exercises.
The frequency associated with strength training workouts will be low, since complete recovery is necessary before working the same muscle groups. While the distant cousin of strength training, known as bodybuilding, usually comprise of isolation exercises. These exercises will target and focus on one specific muscle group. One difference for bodybuilders is the use of moderately heavy weight, about 60% to 80% of their one repetition max. Another difference is the amount of sets and repetitions performed for each exercise. When bodybuilding, each exercise consist of three to four sets in the eight to twelve repetition range.
The rest intervals between sets is shorter in comparison to strength training. Bodybuilders usually rest forty-five to ninety seconds between sets, and three to five minutes between exercises. While bodybuilders perform workouts with higher volume, they have a higher frequency, working each muscle group at least three times a week. Total recovery between workouts is not necessary. There are scientific differences in the way the body is built up in strength training and bodybuilding. Strength training affects the body in an entirely different way than bodybuilding.
In strength training, the two major factors are the recruitment of muscle fibers and the order in which muscles engage to lift weight. Lifting with such substantial weight engages a neuromuscular response. The body reacts in two different ways to become stronger. The body will tear down muscles and rebuild them with more muscle fibers. The result is a stronger, denser muscle than before. The good part is these muscles are around to stay. The next change is the order in which muscles engage. The neuromuscular response will teach the body to engage the larger muscle groups first to accomplish heavy lifting.
However, the science behind bodybuilding is a little different. Bodybuilding uses time under tension to trigger sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy is a buildup of fluid in muscle. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy happens when muscles undergo high repetition and volume training. The buildup of fluid will give the appearance of a larger, stronger muscle, yet that appearance is mostly for show. “This fluid accounts for 25-30% of the muscle’s size” (DeFranco, 2013). Even though, the increased size of the muscle is mostly fluid, there are slight increases in muscle fiber.
There will be minimal strength increases associated with bodybuilding. The strength gains in bodybuilding on the other hand, will not be comparable to strength training. Unfortunately, these muscles are only going to last as long as they bodybuilder keeps up with their workouts. While strength training and body building have their similarities and differences in workouts. One has to find their own reasons to workout. The reasons we choose might simply be to look physically fit. For the individual concerned about overall health, strength training is the obvious choice.
