I chose to write my paper on a topic that is very important in dentistry. I found an article on dental patients that have anxiety or even phobias about their dental care treatments. Patients with dental anxiety or a phobia of dental treatments are a very serious condition. It can result in distress and even oral health impairment. The article I chose conducted twenty-two random dental treatments and tried to reduce the anxiety in the adult patients.
Different forms of cognitive-behavioral therapy, music distraction, acupuncture, nitrous oxide sedation, lavender oil scent, and relaxation therapy were the types of anxiety relief that they used in this trial. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the importance of thinking in how we feel and what we do. Music distraction is used often in the dentist office. While the patient is waiting to be called back for their treatment, the patient is having anxiety and by playing relaxing music in the rooms can help ease the patient.
Acupuncture is another type of treatment where needles are pricked into the skin helps to alleviate pain, nausea, or anxiety. Nitrous oxide sedation is one form of anxiety relief that can be offered inside the dental office. Nitrous oxide sedation, which most people know as “laughing gas”, is distributed to the patient through a mask and it makes the patient feel more comfortable during the treatment. Lavender aromatherapy has become very popular today.
It is known to relieve stress, anxiety, headaches, and insomnia. Lastly, relaxation therapy, which is also known as relaxation imagery, is used to alleviate stress, pain, and anxiety. The article stated that the anxiety of dental treatment was the number one cause of poor dental health.
