6.4 Roosevelt’s New Deal Response to the Great Depression

Democratic president who created the New Deal to counter the effects of the Great Depression

New Deal
A collection of multiple programs started to end the Great Depression passed by Franklin Roosevelt; some of these programs included the Emergency Banking Act, AAA, NRA, PWA, TVA, SEC, FERA, CWA, and the CCC

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
New Deal program that protected bank deposits from being lost if the bank went bankrupt.

Fair Employment Practices
prohibited discrimination in any government-related work; increased black employment

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
an independent agency of the government that regulates financial markets and investment companies

Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)
Gave farmers money to reduce crop size to reduce production and bring up the value of crops

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
A New Deal agency created to generate electric power and control floods in a seven-U.S.-state region around the Tennessee River Valley . It created many dams that provided electricity as well as jobs.

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
a public work relief program for unemployed men so they have jobs. the men worked on jobs related to conservation and development of natural resources

Works Progress Administration (WPA)
Agency established in 1935 and headed by Harry Hopkins that hired the unemployed for construction, conservation, and arts programs

“court-packing” plan
President FDR’s failed 1937 attempt to increase the number of US Supreme Court Justices from 9 to 15 in order to save his 2nd New Deal programs from constitutional challenges

Social Security Act
guaranteed retirement payments for enrolled workers beginning at age 65; set up federal-state system of unemployment insurance and care for dependent mothers and children, the handicapped, and public health

Fair Labor Standards Act
1938 law that set a minimum wage, a maximum workweek of 44 hours, and outlawed child labor
